Mitochondria are often referred to as the “powerhouse of the cell,” as if they’re little batteries.

But they’re so much more than that.

They’re living, breathing, fluctuating, even dancing signaling networks that determine how your body generates energy at the most fundamental level, and even how you age.

In fact, if you look for the signature that distinguishes the longest-lived people — including a recent report on a woman who lived to 117 — what stands out in healthy aging is healthy mitochondria.

But the amazing thing about mitochondria is that, unlike a battery or an engine in a car, they can recover, heal, and renew themselves. And you can make them do this, starting today with free tools – but also, cutting-edge tools like performance enhancing mitochondrial peptides and hormones.

Your Mitochondria Dance with the Sun

Let’s start at the beginning of your day: when you wake up and greet the sun. (Unless you live in Boston in the winter and spend several months of the year vitamin D-starved like Gollum.)

Jokes aside, exposure to morning sunlight does something very interesting: It kicks off a mitochondrial dance.

What do I mean by this?

Well, your mitochondria are not fixed, static little batteries. They ebb and flow. They fuse together and break apart in a dynamic process known as “fusion” and “fission.”

And this dance is critically important for maintaining mitochondrial function.

  • When mitochondria fuse together, they effectively become more powerful and efficient.

  • But breaking apart (fission) matters too: It helps segregate old and damaged mitochondrial components so they can be broken down and recycled for parts in a process known as “mitophagy.”

Imagine if the batteries in your phone could merge together into a super battery when demand increased, then split apart to repair themselves. That’s basically what’s happen in your body every day… trillions upon trillions of times.

The balance between fusion and fission is dictated by light and circadian rhythm.

In fact, there was a fascinating paper out of Oxford last year — coincidentally from the exact same department where I did my PhD: the Department of Physiology, Anatomy, and Genetics — identifying this dance of mitochondrial fusion and fission as one of the drivers of sleep pressure.

Now, there are some experiments you simply cannot do in humans, and this is one of them.

But when researchers manipulate mitochondrial fusion and fission in animals, they can actually alter sleep drive itself.

It’s a bidirectional dance: light helps regulate mitochondrial dynamics, and mitochondrial dynamics help regulate sleep. By why does this really matter?
