And no, it’s not a GLP drug. It’s not related to Ozempic or Retatrutide or any of that species of medicine.
But let’s begin not with pharmaceuticals. Let’s begin with nature.
What Can We Learn from Genetic Freaks?
There’s a gene that codes for a hormone called “myostatin.”
Myostatin is negative regulator of muscle growth.
Occasionally, animals—and even some humans—are born with myostatin deficiency.
The result is what’s known as the “double-muscle” phenotype.
And in the era of AI, let me be clear: these is not AI.
They’re real. Real freaky! But real!
This double muscle phenomenon has been observed in certain cattle, such as the Belgian Blue (pictured)—in dogs, called ‘bully whippets’—and in mice, called Arnold Schwarzensqueakers.
Okay, I made up the Arnold Schwarzensqueakers. But the others are real!
There are also a few humans who appear to have been blessed with this genetic gift.
Myostatin itself is myokine, meaning a hormone released by muscle cells and acting back on muscles inhibit their growth.
This leads to an obvious hypothesis: If we could create a molecule—say, a human antibody—that neutralizes myostatin (or its receptors), could we recapitulate this effect?
Could we develop a therapy that preserves or builds while blasting fat mass.
It turns out, the answer may be… Yes. We may be approaching a new era for the human species… maybe. Let’s take a peek.
